Skip bins are a convenient way to get rid of lots of rubbish. But they’re large metal boxes that usually need to be placed in your front yard for easy access.
While there’s nothing wrong with placing a skip in your own yard, you may need council approval if your skip is going to affect public land, footpaths or roads.
Regulations differ from one council area to another. In this article, we’ll see whether you need a council permit for a skip bin in Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Moreton Bay.
You need a council permit to place a skip bin on public property, including footpaths, roads, nature strips and driveway laybacks. You typically won’t need a permit to place the skip on private land.
These regulations are set by your local council. Here’s the relevant information for South East Queensland:
In the Brisbane City Council area, you generally need a permit to place a skip bin on a public road, footpath or driveway layback. Exceptions apply if:
Most skip bin hire companies won’t be able to provide turnaround within 48 hours, so it’s better to obtain a permit and avoid the fines for violating these regulations.
You’ll need a permit from Logan City Council if you want to place a skip bin on a footpath or nature strip. The permit allows you to keep a skip bin on public land for up to 14 days.
Vist the Logan City Council website for more information.
You’ll need a permit from Ipswich City Council to place a skip on the nature strip if it interferes with pedestrian access or safety. Skips normally can’t be placed on the road. You need a separate permit from the Ipswich or Queensland Government if you need to leave your skip on a public road.
Moreton Bay Council allows skip bins to be placed on footpaths and roads without a permit, as long as you meet the follow criteria:
If you’re planning to use a skip for longer than 72 hours or you don’t meet the other criteria, you’ll need to apply for a permit.

Skip bins can be placed on a private driveway if necessary. You’ll need a permit if the skip is placed on the driveway layback (also called a crossover)
The crossover is the area where the driveway connects to the road. It usually falls outside of your property boundary and crosses the footpath, making it public land.
While we can place a skip on your driveway if necessary, Super Skips recommends placing your skip on soil, grass or gravel. Even a small skip can weigh several tonnes when it’s full of waste. This can damage your driveway and/or cause the concrete to crack.
Hiring a skip bin is the best way to manage the waste from your next project. If you’re demolishing a building, renovating your kitchen or tearing up the backyard, we’ve got a skip bin to suit your needs.
