Ipswich Council's Free FLEXiSKiP vs. Hiring a Super Skip: Which Do You Need?
If you’re an Ipswich homeowner staring down a garage full of old furniture or a backyard that’s gotten well out of hand, you’ve got more options than you might think. You probably already know you can hire a skip bin, but did you know Ipswich City Council offers eligible residents a free skip service once a year?
It’s called the FLEXiSKiP, and it won’t cost you a cent. But like most free things, there are some limitations. The FLEXiSKiP is genuinely useful in the right situation; in the wrong one, it can leave you frustrated and stuck with a pile of rubbish it won’t accept.

What Is the Ipswich FLEXiSKiP?
The FLEXiSKiP is a council-run service delivered through a partnership between Ipswich City Council, Ipswich Waste Services, and the Handel Group. It’s a heavy-duty 2 cubic metre skip bag, roughly the size of a large pallet, dropped at your kerbside and collected once you’ve filled it.
It’s a simple four-step process:
- Set up an online account
- Book your bag for delivery
- Fill it within 21 days of receiving it
- Book a collection
Delivery takes up to 10 business days, and collection occurs within 1 to 10 business days after you book.
You can order one for free each year, although you’ll need to provide card details when you register, as charges can apply if you breach the terms and conditions.
What can go in?
The FLEXiSKiP is designed for large household items: old couches, mattresses, fridges, washing machines, dryers, stoves, computers, bikes, carpets and rugs, timber, tiles, bricks, bath tubs, garden organics like lawn clippings and palm fronds, and mirrors or furniture containing glass.
What can’t go in?
The FLEXiSKiP does not accept construction and demolition material (beyond basic concrete, bricks, and tiles), general household rubbish or food scraps, batteries, car parts, tyres, hazardous waste like gas bottles, asbestos or chemicals, liquids, paints, broken glass, or any commercial or business waste. If your cleanout involves renovation rubble or building offcuts, the FLEXiSKiP isn’t the right fit.
The weight limit and charges
The service accommodates up to 165kg total, equivalent to a standard fridge, a 7kg washing machine, a single mattress, and a push bike. Exceed that, and you’re charged $0.20 per kilogram over the limit. There’s also a $50 fee if you fail to book a collection within 21 days of receiving the bag, and another $50 for each failed collection attempt, whether that’s due to incorrect placement, oversized contents, or non-accepted items in the bag.
If the two long straps on the FLEXiSKiP can’t touch each other, the bag is likely too full and additional charges may apply.
Eligibility
Most Ipswich residents with a regular wheelie bin service and clear kerbside access are eligible. If you live in a high-rise or unit complex with a bulk bin service, a rural property without kerbside collection, or you’re dealing with commercial waste, you won’t qualify. What Does Hiring a Skip Bin from Us Look Like?
When you book with us, it’s simple: choose your size, pick a delivery date, and we’ll have a bin at your door the next day. When you’re done, we come and collect it.
We offer six bin sizes, from 2m³ right up to 12m³, so whether you’re clearing out a spare room or gutting an entire house, there’s an option that fits. The 6m³ holds the equivalent of about 24 wheelie bins, and the 12m³ handles around 48. You get up to 10 days to fill your bin, and our pricing is flat-rate and doesn’t change if you need an early pickup.
We accept general household waste, green waste, building and construction debris, clean concrete, and construction timber. We also offer recyclable skips for your green waste, clean concrete, and timber, making it better for the environment and helping bring your cost down.

- Cost: The FLEXiSKiP wins on price. Free is hard to beat, but it’s worth treating it like what it is: a council benefit with conditions attached, not an unlimited freebie. If it suits your situation, use it.
- Speed: We offer next-day delivery across Ipswich. The FLEXiSKiP can take up to 10 business days just to arrive, and then another 1 to 10 business days for collection after you book it. If you’re mid-renovation, preparing a property for sale, or just want the job done this weekend, waiting up to two weeks for a bag isn’t going to cut it.
- Size and capacity: Both options start at 2m³ at the entry level. But if your job is bigger than that, we can scale with you, right up to 12m³. The FLEXiSKiP is fixed at 2m³ and capped at 165kg. A single large couch, fridge, and washing machine can get close to that limit quickly.
- What waste is accepted: The FLEXiSKiP is specifically for large household items. It won’t take renovation debris, construction material, or general household rubbish. If your project involves pulling up flooring, knocking out a wall, or clearing a shed full of mixed waste, we’re the right call. Our skips handle all of that.
- Flexibility and placement: The FLEXiSKiP must sit on the kerbside with at least 4 metres of clearance from powerlines, trees, parked cars, and driveways, and not every property can accommodate that. Our bins can go in your driveway, which is more practical for most jobs and keeps the street looking tidy.
- How often you can use it: The FLEXiSKiP is a once-per-year service per household. You can book with us whenever you need, as many times as you need.
When the FLEXiSKiP Is the Right Call
For certain jobs, the FLEXiSKiP is a great option, and you should use it. If you’re doing a simple household declutter to get rid of an old mattress or a washing machine that’s finally given up, the council service is a free and easy way to get it done.
It works best when you have time to plan ahead and you have clear kerbside access. If this is your one big clear-out for the year and there’s no renovation waste involved, take advantage of it.
When You Should Call Us Instead
If any of the following sounds like your situation, a hired skip is the smarter move:
- You’re doing a renovation, knockdown, or any building work. The FLEXiSKiP doesn’t accept construction and demolition waste. We do.
- You need a bin quickly. We deliver next day, but the FLEXiSKiP can take up to two weeks just to arrive.
- You’ve already used your FLEXiSKiP this year. Once it’s gone, it’s gone until next calendar year.
- Your load is heavy, large, or a mixed bag. If you’re not sure everything fits under 165kg, or your waste doesn’t fit neatly into the FLEXiSKiP’s accepted list, booking with us removes the guesswork and the risk of penalty charges.
- You want the bin on your property, not the street. Our bins go in your driveway. No kerbside clearance rules, no bag sitting on the nature strip for weeks.
It’s also worth knowing the two services don’t have to be an either/or. Some Ipswich homeowners use their free FLEXiSKiP for old furniture and white goods, then book a skip with us for the renovation or garden waste side of the job. Between the two, you can cover a lot of ground.
