What Can and Can’t Go in a Skip Bin?

Hiring a skip is a great way to get rid of your unwanted waste. We’ll deliver it to your door, you fill it up, and then we safely dispose of your rubbish!

But you can’t put everything in a skip.

The way we handle your skip depends on the types of waste you’re disposing of. To make our lives easier and decrease the amount of waste going to landfill, we ask customers to separate their rubbish into different skip bins.

So what can and can’t go in a skip bin? Let’s find out!

Can You Put Asbestos in a Skip Bin?

You cannot put asbestos products or asbestos waste in a skip bin if you live in the Brisbane region. Asbestos waste can only be disposed of by a licensed contractor.

Asbestos fibres are incredibly harmful to your health. If you need to dispose of asbestos, or if you are unsure whether your home contains asbestos, contact a licensed professional for help.

Can You Put Food Waste in a Skip Bin?

While food waste is organic and compostable, it can’t be put in our skip bins. Food waste rots quickly and attracts pests like rats.

Food waste should always be bagged and disposed of through your city’s rubbish collection service. If you have more food waste than your bin can handle, you can request an additional bin from your council or upgrade to a dumpster.

Can You Put a Mattress in a Skip Bin?

You can’t put a spring mattress in a skip bin. Mattresses containing springs need additional treatment before they can be disposed of, so they can’t be mixed with other waste.

You may be able to put a foam mattress in a skip bin, depending on the hire company.

Talk to your skip bin hire company if you need to get rid of an old mattress. Some companies allow you to dispose of mattresses for an additional fee.

How Do I Dispose of Hazardous Waste?

Skip bins can’t be used to dispose of hazardous waste such as:

  • Asbestos
  • Batteries (including car batteries)
  • Oil and chemicals
  • Liquid paints
  • Human or animal waste
  • Medical waste
  • Tyres

These types of waste contain harmful chemicals and materials that are difficult or dangerous to handle. They need to be disposed of properly to avoid harming our team and the environment around us.

Each local council maintains its own hazard waste drop off centres. You can find out more about disposing of hazardous waste on your local council website:
